West African Djembe Drumming - Moribayassa

In his work with youth, program creator and West African djembe instructor Michael J. Taylor has seen how drumming can enliven and educate the whole child on a number of different levels. Qualities like discipline, patience, pitch recognition, focus, problem solving, independence, interdependence and determination translate into reward, community and “positivity” when youth drum. The practice of all of these things together builds character and confidence. In addition After learning ones part, the next step is to listen to the whole while playing, knowing/feeling where your part fits in. ‘It is fascinating seeing youth understand what it is to understand on a deeper level than they are accustomed to’, states Taylor, ‘by this I mean not only understanding and mastering the pieces of the puzzle, the parts, but fitting them together, making sense of one rhythm, one puzzle, where everyone has a role in the whole.’
